Late in the game of the Lame Duck Session, the topic of changes to the MI Administrative Rules For Special Education (MASE) came into view. Thanks to the Michigan Alliance for Special Education for keeping abreast of this very important meeting and alerting the people of Michigan. As hard as it is to drop everything and get to Lansing with short notice and an early morning meeting time, DD-MI members Denise Diaz and Sarah Cotterman, with help from their families, successfully rearranged their day to represent the children and families of Michigan! There were many other DD-MI supporters, members of MASE, along with many other concerned parents in attendance.
What were the implications of the changes? They are summarized in the graphic to the left. Why was this so important? Per MASE, if parents don't outnumber MDE, ISD and school district staff, the Joint Committee (JCAR) members will not be moved or hard-pressed to stop the rules (done by choosing not to vote on them). DECEMBER 11, 2014--LANSING MI The Power of the People -- a packed room full of concerned parents and citizens--something these committee members had NEVER seen before! Senator John Pappageorge: (paraphrase) I have never seen a turnout this large. I understand that the MDOE has worked hard on these changes, but the presence of all these people here indicates to me that you are not done. I move that we not vote on this today. (Which results in a dismissal of this draft of changes to MARSE) Fellow JCAR committee members supported dismissing the vote. The meeting was adjourned 45 minutes after it began. Thank you to all the DD-MI supporters who turned up with us today. Just showing up is powerful; we learn it more every day on this journey. Thank you to Lt Gov Brian Calley for your support! And to JCAR for recognizing the need for further improvements in order to ensure better outcomes in Special Education. |

Decoding Dyslexia of Michigan went to the Capitol Building on October 1, 2014 to receive the October Dyslexia Awareness Month Proclamation from Governor Rick Snyder. While we were there, we also held an Awareness Exhibit for legislators and State Board of Education Members to walk through. We had many parents, professionals, college students and kids there to help display their awesome Super Powers and discuss dyslexia with visitors of the exhibits. It was an amazing day of raising awareness, advocating, networking and celebrating the wonderful attributes of dyslexics!

August 11, 2014 was the kick off to the official "A Mountain Stands" book tour. Scott gave a fantastic presentation to the kids, parents, and advocates of the Decoding Dyselxia Michigan Organization and community. Travelers came from as far away as Indiana and Traverse City. We thank everyone who attended and those that have been supportive every step of the way. DD-MI was honored to have been a part of such an amazing event! Scott's presentation gave an interactive, in-depth look at how a dyslexic's brain processes information; he gives hope to those facing challenges--everything from dyslexia to bullying to seeking ways to better oneself; Scott's ability to connect with the audience, especially the youth, made this event even more special! The audience members are still raving about the presentation; they left feeling enlightened, empowered, educated and encouraged to seek their own learning styles and become excellent communicators so they can make their own allies and amazing "think-tanks" for their futures! Decoding Dyslexia MI and Scott Sonnon wish to recognize and extend our gratitude to The Commons and 2/42 Community Church for the generous donation of the venue for this amazing event. a person with dyslexia or the spouse, parent or sibling of someone with dyslexia? Are you a teacher seeking more ways to help your students? Are you a concerned citizen with no ties to dyslexia but a drive to learn more to help others reach their potential? Look for Decoding Dyslexia MI on Facebook, Twitter and on the web--keep up on the latest information! Decoding Dyslexia is a grassroots movement that started in NJ a few short years ago and has spread to ALL 50 states & 5 provinces in Canada!! Inquiries have come from as far away as Australia! DD is raising awareness and making a difference across the world! In early 2014, several parents from all over Michigan met in the middle, in Midland, and realized our travel distance from each other would be best served by splitting the state into regions. Denise, Sarah and Lisa head up SE Michigan. Our amazing Traverse City friends, Terra, Marion and Shawn head up the Northern portion of our state. Awesome Anne and her son, Lawrence are the Founding Members of DD-MI in the Western region of our great state. Terra has even met with a parent in the U.P. to help start a chapter there! Each of our regions are looking for more people to join our groups and add your expertise to our growing network of concerned parents, teachers and public who have a joint mission to make a better educational system for all of Michigan's children--our future leaders! |
